 FAQ for Transport of Living Animals

    Air China Cargo implements professional transport program for various wild animals and poultry and livestock who have certain requirements for air quality and temperature range and has successful cases for air transport, mainly including the following eight categories:
  • 1)
  • Pets and livestock category, for example, cat, dog, pig, cattle, horse, etc.;
  • 2)
  • Birds and poultry: birds, chickens, ducks, etc.;
  • 3)
  • Primates: monkey, ape, apes, orangutan etc.;
  • 4)
  • Reptiles: lizards, turtles, etc.;
  • 5)
  • Amphibians: frogs, toads, etc.;
  • 6)
  • Fish: fish, loach, shrimp, etc.;
  • 7)
  • Insects: bees, scorpions, silkworm, etc.;
  • 8)
  • Not-domesticated mammals: lion, tiger, leopard, bear, panda, fox, monkey, alpaca, antelope, camel, deer, etc.;

First of all, your puppy shall be over 8 weeks old, be packed in aviation-specific hard plastic box sized for the puppy. You shall handle with quarantine procedures for pets at quarantine authorities before consigning. After completing preparations of consigning procedures, you shall book shipping space from airline company from which you are applying for flight at least one day in advance. If the booked flight is international airline, you shall handle with relevant customs procedures.

  • 1)
  • Consigning certificate for living animals, filled in by the shipper, in duplicate;
  • 2)
  • Sanitation certificate of animal transport (quarantine certificate): issued by inspection and quarantine authority of PRC;
  • 3)
  • Health certificate (veterinarian certificate);
  • 4)
  • Requirements for transferring, prohibitions, or restrictions in written;
  • 5)
  • In international transport, for animals in CITES appendix, import, export, and transit of animals shall be provided with transport permits and permits. For national protected animals or those listed in CITES appendix, the shipper shall provide import and export permits issued by government authorities, for example, certificates of endangered wild fauna and flora species, re-export certificate, and import and export certificate required to be handled with by international organizations or states.

    In domestic transport, for national key protected wild animals, the shipper shall provide certificates of transport approved and issued by province-level administrative authority or its authorized unit.

    Take Beijing as an example, the consigning procedures are as follows (Local places may be slightly different. For details, please contact local sales staff.):
  • 1)
  • Fill in consigning form for living animal transport;
  • 2)
  • Submit relevant documents (animal health certificate (quarantine certificate), CITES certificate, import and export certificate etc.), which shall be inspected by consigning department;
  • 3)
  • Check cargo packages, markings and labels by consigning department;
  • 4)
  • Cargo weighing and warehousing;
  • 5)
  • Fill in airway bill and submit copies of airway bill;
  • 6)
  • Fill in consigning inspection form for transport of living animals (international transport);
  • 7)
  • Submit airway bill and nail attached documents on the bill.

Compared with general cargo, increase the fee for living animal inspection: for inspection of domestic living animals, minimum RMB 50 Yuan per bill (no more than five pieces), and if quantity of pieces is more than five, for every increased one piece other than five pieces, additional RMB 10 Yuan per piece shall be charged; for inspection of international living animals, the charge is RMB 200 Yuan per bill; part places may be slightly different. At first, do such in order to fully consider type of aircraft, shipping space, space ventilation situation, weather, loading locations, and other situations of cargo influencing transport of animals, ground storage, operation facilities and other factors and thus to ensure that safe and comfortable transport is achieved in each terminal.

  • 1)
  • Ensure living animals have good health and suitable for air transport;
  • 2)
  • For pregnant animals, the shipper shall provide veterinary certificate for proving that the animal is no potential of giving birth during transport and suitable for transport.
  • 3)
  • Air China Cargo does not ship monkey during pregnancy, breastfeeding mothers of animals, and young animals in lactation;
  • 4)
  • Book whole-course flight, ensure consigned animals meet special requirements in laws and regulations for air transport animals by countries of origin stop, underway, and destination.
  • 5)
  • Ensure the animals consigned are not captured illegally , and provide all documents according to transport stipulations of states, Air China Cargo, and IATA;
  • 6)
  • truly and correctly fill in declaration of living animals;
  • 7)
  • Truly indicate gender of estrus female animals and mammals, whether pregnant or giving birth within 48 hours;
  • 8)
  • The shipper shall provide solid container, proper diet, underlay, and other related equipment suitable for properties of animals and complying with Transport Rules of Living Animals of IATA.
  • 9)
  • The shipper shall ensure the consigned animals have been correctly classified and packaged, and marked with accurate animal name and complete labels and markings. Marking contents shall include food tips passed outside of animal container, date and time of the last time of diet; and record situations of applying animal drugs, for example, anesthetics name, dosage, administration time, and means.
  • 10)
  • The shipper shall ensure the consignee of animals has known about flight situations so that taking delivery can be arranged immediately after arrival of animals.

    Air China Cargo fully understands impact of geographical locations and environmental change on animals and thus actively reduce non-comfort degree of animals to the minimum, including following measures but not limited to:
  • 1)
  • Before loading on aircraft or after unloading from aircraft, put animals on animal-specific storage according to animal behaviors (Beijing has special animal hotels); for animals fear of cold and wind, place them in places from wind and with warmth; for animals fear of light and heat, place them in cool and dim places; staff are forbidden to watch around and play with animals to prevent from disturbance; and it is forbidden to feed animals foods and water without consent of the shipper, and so on.
  • 2)
  • During flight, provide oxygen supply, ventilation, and temperature control services according to animal behaviors.

In order to ensure health and safety of animals, Air China Cargo clearly stipulates: without consent of the shipper, it is forbidden to feed animals foods and water; when feed animals foods and water, it shall be operated in strict accordance with written instructions of the shipper.

Air China Cargo has many models of aircraft, and when book shipping space, it is ensured the shipping space for loading animals has functions such as oxygen supply, ventilation, and temperature control, and after loading of animals on aircraft, the captain is informed in written to ensure comfortable environment for animals during travel.

  • 1)
  • Put forward escort declaration when book shipping space of flight;
  • 2)
  • Handle consigning procedures for escorting cargo and lodge escort application at consigning counter based on passport (or identity card) of supercargo and letter of introduction from his unit;
  • 3)
  • The supercargo shall buy ticket and handle with check-in processes and boarding procedures based on ordinary passenger.

  • 1)
  • Book whole-course shipping space for escorted cargo;
  • 2)
  • Handle with consigning procedures within designated time preflight;
  • 3)
  • Confirm flight number, ticket number, and "escort cargo" words in "Note for Storage and Transport" column;
  • 4)
  • Responsible for looking after cargo when cargo is staying on the ground and for escort work during ground transport;
  • 5)
  • Guide to loading/unloading work for escort cargo;
  • 6)
  • Watch and look after cargo in time during flight or stop of flight, and take measures to prevent from damage and to avoid occurrence of accidents;
  • 7)
  • Determine handling methods of cargo when abnormal flying, cargo damage, or other accidents take place;
  • 8)
  • Take delivery of cargo at destination and sign in the airway bill.

  • 1)
  • The packaging shall be able to prevent animals from damaging, escaping, or contacting with outside world. Ferocious beasts shall be packed in wire cage plus double layers of wire netting with hand rings for easy loading and unloading.
  • 2)
  • The package size shall be appropriate for size of cargo bay door and volume of cargo bay, shall be applicable to behaviors of animals, and shall have appropriate room for movement of animals.
  • 3)
  • On the bottom of package, facilities for preventing from overflow and scattering of animal feces and urine, and if necessary, locate trays and adequate moisture absorption materials.
  • 4)
  • The package shall have adequate ventilation holes to prevent animals from suffocation.
  • 5)
  • The package including water shall have measures for preventing from overflow and leakage of liquid to prevent liquid from contamination of aircraft floor or equipment, for example, laying plastic sheeting and absorbent paper.
  • 6)
  • For animals requiring special tending, the shipper shall indicate notes on the package.
  • 7)
  • The animal feed required during transport shall be provided by the shipper himself.
  • 8)
  • All tending and special equipment unavailable from the carrier shall be provided by the shipper.
  • 9)
  • On the package, clearly indicate the name of shipper and consignee, detailed address, and contact telephone No., and habits and behaviors of animals.
  • 10)
  • In the event that the shipper consigns poisonous animals endangering humanity, "POISONOUS" words shall be marked on the package.
  • 11)
  • Paste or hang upward label or mark upward direction on the package.
  • 12)
  • Paste or hang "LIVING ANIMAL" label or "EXPERIMENTAL ANIMAL" label according to categories of living animals.
